Student Sustainability Advisory Council (SSAC)

Welcome, high schools, to the
Student Sustainability Advisory Council,
where we make change together.

A green globe with a QR code is held in two hands, with the text 'Want to be added to the Student Sustainability Advisory Council Canvas Course?' above it.

For those that may not be familiar with or are just joining us for the first time, the Student Sustainability Advisory Council (SSAC) has been a passionate student organization supported by teachers and administrators since the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Together, we advocate for sustainable change in our school practices and systems with the goal of improving the district’s impact on the environment. The district-wide SSAC works together to implement real change in their school’s policies to reflect our district’s sustainability plan. We creatively collaborate via monthly meetings and district support throughout the school year in ways to reduce their school’s solid waste, focus on water and energy conservation, and sustainable transportation while improving total health and wellness within their communities.

The district-wide SSAC works together to implement real change in their school’s policies to reflect our district’s sustainability plan. Up to 2 student representatives (juniors preferred) with 1 supporting teacher or staff from each high school along with the Sustainability Office, creatively collaborate via monthly meetings and district support throughout the school year in ways to reduce their school’s solid waste, focus on water and energy conservation, and sustainable transportation while improving total health and wellness within their communities.

The Student Sustainability Advisory Council meets monthly virtually through Teams. It is strongly encouraged for every high school to send at least one - two, we recommend junior, student(s) and one adult representative to each meeting. We will accept seniors as well but now they are focusing on being officers of other clubs.

During the school year, every chapter competes to win the interscholastic SSAC Challenge with awards from $500 - $2000 for those that place. The Annual competition varies year to year, depending on the needs of the district. SSAC school chapters have the opportunities to compete in annual sustainability competition and winning school's environmental/eco-club earn:

  • 1st place - $2,000.00
  • 2nd place - $1,000.00
  • 3rd place - $500.00

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOONE HIGH SCHOOL FOR BEING THE 23-24 SSAC CHAMPION!

Your math battery diversion was wonderful!
